Dr. Giacomo Mulas has been working at the Astronomical Observatory of Cagliari since 1998. He graduated in Physics in 1994 at the University of Cagliari, and obtained his PhD in physics at the same University in 1998. Since the beginning of 2000 he has been a staff astronomer at the Observatory of Cagliari.

In his research activity, Giacomo Mulas has been involved in observational work with optical telescopes, including the development of the data reduction software for the multi-fibre operation mode of the UVES instrument (offered as FLAMES–UVES) at the Paranal Observatory of ESO. He subsequently concentrated on theoretical – modelling studies of organic macromolecules in space, in particular of Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAHs) in photon – dominated regions. He is currently involved in observational programs with the Herschel Space Observatory, aiming at identifying bands of individual PAHs in the far–IR.

Among his main scientific achievements, a large database of computed spectral properties of PAHs, a theoretical model for accurate calculation of the anharmonic structure in molecular vibrational bands at high temperature, and the data reduction software for FLAMES – UVES operating in the ESO pipelines at Paranal and Garching.
