I have been interested in cosmic chemistry for about fifty years. I am particularly concerned to understand the chemistry well enough that we can use models of chemistry to deduce useful astronomical information. This understanding requires information about gas-phase, surface, and solid-state processes. I find it intriguing that different regions of interstellar space have different chemistries that supply characteristic molecular signatures of those regions. My current efforts are largely directed to explore the chemistries in external galaxies where the physical conditions may be very different from those of the Milky Way Galaxy.
